Plan for the future. 

The importance of making your wishes known cannot be overstated. Create a plan for transferring your assets both during life and upon death. Appoint someone to manage your financial affairs when you are no longer able to do so. Appoint someone to make decisions regarding your health care when you are no longer able to do so. Make known your wishes regarding life-sustaining treatment.

Administer the estate.

After life, a petition for probate or administration is filed with with the court on behalf of the deceased person's estate. If the person died with a will, he or she is consider to have died "testate" and a probate proceeding is requested. Conversely, if the person died without a will, he or she is considered to have died "intestate" and an administration proceeding is requested.
